donnie joe’s American Swing Opens Llandeilo Jazz Weekend @ The Angel Hotel
Wow, what a trip to Llandeilo! Traffic was pretty bad on the M4 and A483 last Friday afternoon. You get that here in South Wales when it’s a beautiful Friday afternoon in the summer, and everyone is heading to West Wales for some respite on the lovely beaches over the weekend.
This meant we arrived at our 6:30pm gig to kick off the Llandeilo Jazz & Blues Festival 2015 at 6:30. To top it off, there’s not the most consistent mobile reception throughout this rural countryside, so we couldn’t call ahead to give the festival organisers any forewarning.
We were meant to be playing couple of setup up to 8:30 in the main Pub on the ground floor prior to the Friday night headlining band performing in the main function room upstairs, whose set was starting at 9pm.
So we arrived at 6:30, and double parked on the busier than usual Llandeilo High St and unloaded our gear. I proceeded to park the car and get changed into my stage outfit. I’m not sure how, but by 18:45 we were setup and kicked of our set of music. The pub was packed full of folks ready for the Jazz & Blues Festival and enjoying the fine Ales and drinks on offer at The Angel Hotel.
We took a brief 10 minutes break at 7:30 when we saw the main Festival organiser Dave Brockwell. He couldn’t have been more understanding and relaxed about or late arrival. 'I knew you were coming,' he said. ‘And I know what that Friday traffic is like coming from Cardiff.’ He knew the score. We were in panic mode ourselves arriving so late, and expected panic stations to be 10 fold from the organisers.
All in all it was a fun gig performing for such a warm and inviting crowd and we look forward to coming back to Llandeilo for many year to come.
