Rhondda Jazz Presents donnie joe’s American Swing @ Treorchy Rugby Club

Last night we had the pleasure of performing for the members and guests of the Rhondda Jazz Society at the Treorchy Rugby club. The Rhondda Jazz club has been going for many years and is run by one of South Wales biggest Jazz Stalwarts, Madge Simcox.

Madge is a real jazz fan through and through, as you can hear from her weekly Swing & Jazz radio show; ‘In The Mood’. It airs Mondays from 5-6pm on Rhondda Radio.

Madge is warm, inviting and has a personality that is infectious. It’s no wonder as a steward for many years at the Brecon Jazz Festival, she convinced many of the travelling international acts to make an extra stop after Brecon down to Treorchy to perform in her club.

Why not? For this club is a real family affair. Madge lays out many plates of homemade food for the band; sandwiches, pasties, pies and cakes with help from her loyal friend Gaynor Webster.

I have performed at Rhondda Jazz many times and it is always a pleasure.

The club is run on the last Tuesday of each month in the main room of the Treorchy rugby club. Music is from 8 - 11, so audience members really get their monies worth.

Beyond Madge’s contribution to Welsh Music history, this room at the Treorchy Rugby club was made famous by Max Boyce in 1973 through his Live performance there which culminated in his first major label release. Here in Wales, both Madge and Max are the stuff of legend.
